岩肌や崖に、仏身を表したものを磨崖仏という。
国東半島・六郷満山といえば…、という連想の中で、何番目かに指おられるのが熊野磨崖仏だ。
今回初めて訪れる機会をいただき「ああ、もうボク国東半島大好きっ」となったのは、熊野磨崖仏の御姿とそのロケーションが５割ほどを占める。
駐車場に車をとめて、まずは胎蔵寺へ。
こちらの仁王さまの「阿」「吽」もいい表情だなぁ、と境内へ。おお、いっぱい仏さまがあるぞぉ。
妙にキラキラしていて、これだけ仏さまがおられると、光を発するのか？ と歩み寄った。すると金ピカ銀ギラのシールがたくさん貼付けてあった。梵語をプリントしたシールを、自分の痛いところや悪いところを、仏さまの同じ部位に貼付けて、治癒を祈願しているのだ。
同じ仏像でも人気があるらしく、不動明王さんはちょびっとしか貼られていなかった。全身にシールを貼られ、もとの姿が分からないのはお地蔵さんだろうか。ずっしりと人の痛みを背負っているようで、見ていると全身が痛くなってきた。
ボクは特に気になる部位はないので、御祈願はスルー。境内に並ぶ、石仏を眺めてまわった。ちょっとつたなかったり、顔が素朴すぎたりして…。顔がえぐれていたり、破損しているのはやっぱり廃仏毀釈の影響かな。

この石仏に思いを託した、奉納した人たちの心持ちを思うと、ちょっと暗うつとした気持ちになる。が、同じ方向を向いて鎮座する仏さまを見ていると、うん、微笑みが漏れてきた。

もうすぐ日が暮れる。先を急がねば、と小走りに熊野磨崖仏を目指す。
すぐに、石鳥居が見えた。磨崖仏の結界が鳥居だ。ここも島木と柱の付け根に台輪のある宇佐鳥居である。
高い木立に日差しが遮られ、鳥居は緑色に苔むしていた。杉の木もぶっとい。
ここから一気に神聖な雰囲気が漂い始める。

鳥居をくぐったら、目の前には鬼が一晩で積み上げたという石段。
段差が大きく勾配が急で、天にまっすぐ続いているよう。これが、見た目以上にきつい。引きかえそうかなって、心が折れそうなほど。
豊前市の求菩提山の石段も、鬼が一晩で積み上げた、という伝説があるが、あそこも急だった。鬼が造ったというのは「荘厳な」という意味だけではなく、石段が大きくて登りにくい。つまり、鬼規格の構造物だ、という意味があるに違いない。こんなところを歩かすのは、神仏ではなく鬼だ！ んんー、優しい心を鬼として見つめてくださっているんだ…。などなどブツブツいいながら歩く、修行の道。
ゼエゼエと息を切らし、膝がカクンとなりながらようやく上り切った。
