萬四郎神社

悲劇の豪商伊藤小左衛門

　呉服町は、大博通りから一本入ってすぐ、ペリ●ン便と浜口公園の間に、萬四郎神社といういささか不思議な名前の神社がおわす。

　このお宮は、博多の豪商のなかでも“悲劇の”という冠がつく、伊藤小左衛門にまつわるお宮なのだ。
　
　といいつつ、伊藤小左衛門という豪商がかつて、博多にいたことをボクは知らなかった。
　博多の観光案内サインには、こうある。

　豪商伊藤小左衛門（いとう・こざえもん）は八万貫の身代といわれ、持ち船20隻の他、各港に出店を置いて物産を運び、銀山を開くなどした。1667年、鎖国政策に反対して交易したため、長崎で捉えられて死罪、博多の本家でも一族はことごとく処刑された。当社は、小左衛門の三男小四郎（５歳）、四男萬之助の幼い霊を祭ったと伝えられ、商売繁昌、子供息災の神として信仰されている。

　また、向かいの電信柱には、こんな案内も。

　二代目小左衛門は江戸鎖国初期、伊藤小判を鋳造し、抗清復明のため戦っていた日中ハーフの鄭成功を貿易によって側面から援助した海商。
　その主な交易品の「イマリ」はヨーロッパで珍重され、マイセン窯など高級テーブルウェア発祥のきっかけとなった。

　なるほど。こういった来歴を見る限り、博多の豪商とはこんな感じか？　というスケール感を感じることはできる。萬四郎神社あたりは、伊藤小左衛門の邸宅があったところらしい。
　
　「博多繁昌」「子供息災」。そう彫られた神門をくぐって参拝。
　拝殿の中に、小さな石の祠があって、そこが本殿ということのようだ。拝殿には、ちょっとポップな山笠の奉納絵馬が掲げられていた。

　石の前には獅子頭がポツン。「なんだなんだ？」とのぞき込むと、獅子頭はちょっと伏し目がちに、にんまりと笑っていた。

　博多の復興といえば、太閤秀吉のおかげ、である。
　江戸幕府が開かれたのち、黒田家が筑前を治めるものの、福岡部を開発しただけ、というイメージが強かった。

　しかし冷静に考えると、福岡だけを開発しても仕方ない。博多商人が納める税金がないと、藩政は回らないのだ。黒田藩は黒田藩なりの博多部開発および、博多商人の重用をしていたはず。

　伊藤小左衛門は、黒田時代の時流に乗って頭角を現した豪商だったようだ。

　詳しくは西日本シティ銀行「博多に強くなろう」の「鎖国令に散った幻の博多商人　伊藤小左衛門」を各自調査していただきたいが、とにかく謎の人だ。出自も、何でもうけて身代を築いたのかも諸説紛々。
　
　博多だけじゃなく、長崎にも店を出し、木屋瀬といった宿場町にも店を構え、銀山を経営し、小判すらも発行。ヨーロッパへイマリ＝有田焼を輸出し、国際市場で銀投資を当て、しかも、国姓爺・鄭成功を援助した国際人…。

　二代目小左衛門の身代は七万貫とも八万貫ともいわれ、「天井にギヤマンを張り、その中で金魚を飼って見物するほど」という、妙にリアルな表現で、そのお金持ちぶりが喧伝された。

　断片的な、それこそ噂レベルの情報まで含めると、もう想像を超えて儲けた大商人の姿が浮かび上がってくる。鎖国してしまったニッポンは、さぞかし狭苦しかったろう・・・。

　伊藤小左衛門は、密貿易の罪で、しかも外国に兵器を売った（兵器の原料の鉄とも）ということで、死罪となった。おそらく、密貿易は本当のことだろう。そして、これはまったくボクの憶測だが、当初は黒田藩と一緒に密貿易を行っていたはずだ。
　もうけの取り分でもめたり、あるいは密貿易そのものが幕府に知られそうになったか、というタイミングで切り捨てられたのだろう。そんな気がする。

　本人ばかりではなく、一族もことごとく処断される。50人が追放され、40人近くが斬首された。特に小四郎と萬之助という幼子までもが、斬首されると博多の人々の哀悼の気持ちが極限に達して、萬四郎神社が生まれた。

　名前を合体させたのは、ときの権力者をはばかってのことか。博多の人々は、幼子の霊をなぐさめながら、博多繁昌と子供息災を400年近く祈念してきたことになる。

　朱印船に荷物をたっぷり積んで、荒海にこぎ出して、一山当てる。
　そんな豪商の時代は、小左衛門の死とともに幕を下ろした。
　最後の博多商人とも、幻の豪商とも呼ばれる伊藤小左衛門の生き様を、ボクはもっと知りたいと思った。
