散歩しているとこんもり発見で、近づいてみるとこれがまたなかなかのお社だ。南区清水にある日吉神社だった。

　日吉神社といえば、その名前から滋賀県の日吉大社の御分霊だとすぐに推察された。日吉大社は比叡山（もともとは日枝山といったらしい）の守り神。天台宗が延暦寺を創建すると、天台の守り神ともされた。

　祭神は大山咋神。
　日枝神社の神様を山王と証する場合もあるが、それは大山咋神と大物主神の二柱を合わせた称号で、滋賀・日吉大社では大山咋神を東本宮に、大物主神を西本宮に祀っている。

　江戸時代には江戸城の、明治以降は皇居の鎮守とされているから、なかなか強力な神様である。

　山王神道では、神様の使いとされる“神獣”は猿。豊臣秀吉は幼名を日吉丸と称したが、ようするに猿と呼ばれていたのを格好付けて言っただけだ。
　ご多分に漏れず、この日吉神社でも狛犬代わりにお猿さんが安置されている。子どもの毛繕いをする、親子のお猿さんだ。楽しい気分になる。
