辻占してみよう

お散歩中にふっと見かけたお社には、ご縁を感じてしまう。塞神社。さいじんじゃ、もしくは、さえじんじゃとお読みするのだろうか。
　村境や道路が交差するチマタの路傍に道祖神や塞の神はぢっと立ち、災いや疫病をもたらす悪霊や悪神の侵入を防ぐ、ガーディアンである。

道という言葉の語源は、み＋ちであるという。「ち」とは霊や魂という意味でもあり、文字通りそういったものの通り道を「みち」と読んだんではないか。
　マチとは道の間（ま）で、あぜ道で分けられた田んぼをさす言葉だったとか。界わいを表す巷とは、道が交差する「又」のこと。道路が交差するポイントは人通りが多くなる。交差点からさまざまなモノが入ってくる。良きも悪きも入ってくる。悪いものから守る神様が必要となったゆえんだろう。

　塞の神は民間信仰と、猿田彦神と仏教の地蔵信仰と、さらに中国の道祖神信仰が習合しているようで、なかなか複雑だ。

　辻に立ち、人々の話し声に耳を傾けて吉凶を占う「辻占（つじうら）」という占いが本邦に、万葉集の時代にはあったそうだから、辻というのは相当にスピリチュアルな場所だと考えられていたのだろう。

　といいつつ南区清水の塞神社は、そんな雰囲気は今は無い。　古地図を見てもよく分からないが、塞神社のあるあたりは、人通りの多い繁華なチマタだったのだろう。
　ボクも社頭に立ち、辻占をやってみた。すると、紅白柄の「福袋」と抱えれた紙袋を持ったじっちゃん、ばあちゃんがドヤドヤと集団で現れた。「●●さんも元気で、ほーんと、良かったあ」とか「こげんともらえるとは思わんかったやね」などと元気に立ち去っていく。「吉」だな、きっと。
